Gout Pain Can Be Managed
Gout is a painful, inflammatory form of arthritis. Those affected will typically feel an intense stiffness in the joints of their feet, particularly in the big toe. Schedule a visit to learn about how gout can be managed and treated.
Foot Pain Can Occur for Different Reasons
There are numerous joints, muscles, and tendons that connect the bones in the feet. There are many reasons why injuries to the feet can occur, often causing pain and reduced flexibility. For example, if you are experiencing heel pain, you may have what is known as a heel spur, or it can be indicative of plantar fasciitis. Both of these ailments can be caused by wearing shoes that do not fit properly, or from frequently participating in specific sporting activities. If you notice a yellow, hardened area on the top of the toes, you may have developed a corn. Mild relied can be found when a protective pad is applied to the affected area, in addition to wearing shoes that are slightly larger. A bunion is a deformity of the bone in the big toe. For severe bunions, surgery may be a viable option to permanently remove the bony protrusion. If you have any type of foot pain, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat any kind of foot pain.

What is Hammertoe?
A hammertoe will occur when there is a bending of one or both joints of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes. This bending can put pressure on the toe when wearing shoes, which in turn will cause problems to develop. The most common cause of hammertoe is an imbalance of a muscle or tendon. This is what causes the toe to bend. Some symptoms of hammertoe to look out for are pain or irritation of the affected toe when wearing shoes, corns and calluses on the toe, inflammation, open sores and contracture of the toe. There are a variety of different measures used to treat hammertoe. You can use a pad prescribed by the podiatrist that protects corns and calluses on the feet from irritation. Another option is to change shoewear. Any shoes that are too short, have pointed toes, or shoes with high heels can force the toe against the front of the shoe. Instead, look for shoes that have a comfortable feel that give the toes enough room. Orthotic devices are also found to be helpful. A final treatment would be medications that are anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, which are recommended to reduce any pain and inflammation. In a small amount of cases if the hammertoe has become painful and rigid, then surgery may be required to treat it. If you feel that you exhibit any of the signs or symptoms of hammertoe, it is recommended that you see a podiatrist as soon as you can.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Joseph D. Ruffo, DPM, PC from New York. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
- Pain in the affected toes
- Development of corns or calluses due to friction
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Contracture of the toes
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

People who experience gout flare ups are aware of the severe pain and discomfort that often accompanies these attacks. It will typically affect the big toe, and common symptoms can include redness, swelling, and tenderness. A medical condition that is referred to as hyperuricemia can occur if there is excess uric acid in the bloodstream. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including having high blood pressure, being diabetic or obese. There are specific foods that have elevated purine levels, and if these are consumed, a surplus of uric acid levels may form in the blood. These can include red meat, shellfish, and foods or drinks that have excess sugar. There are methods that can be implemented which may help to prevent gout attacks. These consist of changing your eating habits to incorporate healthy foods, performing a gentle exercise routine, and to lose any existing additional weight. If you are afflicted with gout, it is suggested to speak with a podiatrist who can properly help you to manage this condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Stretching the Calf Muscles May Help the Feet
Tight calf muscles can lead to uncomfortable foot conditions that include plantar fasciitis, bunions, and tendinitis. There are reasons why calf muscles may be shortened, including genetic factors, wearing high heels for the majority of the day, or problems with posture. When the calf muscles are properly stretched, walking and running activities will typically become easier to perform. An effective calf stretch is done by standing on a step while letting the heel of one foot dip, and then repeating on the other foot. This is helpful in lengthening the Achilles tendon. Those patients who are interested in yoga can perform a downward dog yoga stretch. This is done by placing the hands on the floor, and lifting up and down on the toes. If you would like additional information about the benefits of stretching feet, please consult with a podiatrist.
Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Joseph D. Ruffo, DPM, PC from New York. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
Stretching the Feet
Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.
Great ways to stretch your feet:
- Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
- Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
- Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle
Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Are Corns Painful?
A corn on the foot will typically develop as a result of friction the foot endures. This can come from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, not wearing socks, or performing repetitive actions, such as running and jogging. Corns can be quite painful, and there are several ways to find mild relief. Wearing socks may help to put a barrier between the shoe and the foot. Additionally, if the corn is caused by wearing poorly-fitting shoes, it is beneficial to properly measure your foot, which will help to determine the correct shoe size. There are patients who find comfort in applying a lotion to the affected area. This can be helpful in softening the skin, which may prevent the corn from cracking. If you are afflicted with a corn, it is advised to seek the counsel of a podiatrist, who can suggest the best treatment, and recommend preventive measures.
